A native of Delray Beach, Florida, Rumph was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round (27th overall) of the 2002 NFL draft. Mike joined the Redskins on August 14, 2006 as the 49ers traded him for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs.  He will be making a comeback of sorts in the 2006 season, as he suffered a torn plantar fascia in practice after the third game of the 2005 season and was put on injured reserve the rest of the year. He attended Atlantic High School where he was a multi-sport star.  Rumph garnered numerous awards on the football field as a Shark, including a National Recruiting Advisor All-American selection, a Super Prep All-America nod, and was named as the top defensive back by Street & Smith's.  He racked up 108 tackles his senior season, including six interceptions, plus totaled 519 offensive yards with five rushing touchdowns.  Rumph was an All-State second-team selection his junior year and  also lettered in basketball and track at Atlantic.  Rumph stayed in Florida for college and became a University of Miami Hurricane.  He started 36-of-44 games over four years at Miami and wrapped up his career  with 164 tackles (117 solo), plus recorded six interceptions and ran one back for a touchdown. He never allowed a touchdown reception in three years as a starter.  Mike was a part of a Hurricane squad that won the National Championship game against Nebraska in the Rose Bowl in 2001.  He was a Liberal Arts major at the University of Miami.
